HSBC and Standard Chartered just completed the first live transaction on Swift's blockchain. The headlines scream "revolutionary." The market yawns. I don't.

Let me be clear: this is not a crypto breakthrough. It's a bank IT upgrade wrapped in DLT jargon. The transaction happened on a permissioned ledger, controlled by the same institutions that have dominated global finance for centuries. No tokens. No DeFi. No decentralization.


Context: What They Actually Did

Swift is not a blockchain company. It's a messaging network that connects 11,000+ banks worldwide. For decades, it handled the "communication" layer of cross-border payments—telling Bank A to pay Bank B, but not actually moving the money. That settlement part? That's still done through clunky correspondent banking networks, with days of delay and layers of fees.

This trial changes that. By using a permissioned DLT, Swift is trying to merge the messaging and settlement layers. The idea: if both banks can see the same ledger, they don't need to reconcile messages. Transaction finality happens in seconds, not days.

The technical details are sparse. Ripple's entire value proposition is that it can replace Swift for cross-border payments.
